Essentials of Wireless Network Security
In previous Breakthroughs issues, we’ve discussed the importance of ensuring that authorized wireless access points have been through the necessary steps to provide maximum security and privacy of company and user information. An unsecured wireless network allows people outside your building to “leech” off the services you’ve paid for and get free access to the Internet. These individuals could also use your connection for illegal activity such as identity theft.
Not only are unsecured wireless access points a risk, but unauthorized wireless access points are as well – especially if you don’t know they exist. Whether they were established by an employee or an unidentified individual, network equipment is available that will track down new access points that are unauthorized to your company’s network. It’s also important to stress to employees that they’re not allowed to bring their own access points into your business, and educate them on the potential harm this could have on the company.
In addition, it’s best to keep public wireless access separate from your company network. This gives your employees wireless access to the company network and provides public wireless Internet access to customers and vendors. For security reasons, train your employees not to do company work on the public wireless network. Many businesses, such as medical facilities and auto dealerships, are moving to this type of dynamic wireless environment.
Not only are unsecured wireless access points a risk, but unauthorized wireless access points are as well – especially if you don’t know they’re there.
