How it works:
-
Site blocking uses the URL (web address www.something) to block or allow the site to show up in the browser. The disadvantage is in creating lists of questionable sites. With new websites and name changes happening all the time it can be a challenge to an application to keep up.
-
Content filtering looks for words in the content that trigger the blocking of the content. The issue is that a filter needs to know the difference in words use such as a medical site with clinical use of a word compared to site with objectionable material.
-
Sometime the sites or content that needs to be blocked is for a specific issue such as persons who should not use a site, such as online gaming.
-
Some tools rely on hardware others on software. Each tool will have it’s own advantages and has to be judged on it’s own merits. A tech savvy person might be able to get around the filter or blocking. So supervision and instruction is also needed to complete the control of the use of the Internet
