1. What is home networking?

4. Can I setup a wireless network myself with equipment from an electronics store?

D&E Communications offers the advantage of convenience, support, value and more. Our local experts will recommend a wireless home network setup that’s best for your usage, speed and geography. Our technicians will complete the installation and configuration to make sure your home network is up and running quickly and smoothly. Technical support is Available M-F 8-10 Sat. 5. What types of home networking are available?

D&E Communications offers primarily wireless home networking options. Wired options are available for specific needs.

A wireless network uses technology where information is transmitted through the air via wireless radio signals. This eliminates the need for wires to be installed in the home to connect various devices to the network. If you want to avoid having to wire your home and would like the freedom to move about your home with a laptop, wireless home networking would be your ideal choice.

A wired network uses Ethernet wires to transmit data. Ethernet home networks are one of the fastest available, but require additional cost for wiring. If you will be using your network to handle graphic intensive applications, and don't mind extra wiring in your home, wired networking would work best for you.

7. How far will my wireless network reach?

Generally, wireless networking routers support a range of up to 150 feet indoors and 300 feet outdoors. The wireless signal will penetrate most walls so you can have devices almost anywhere in your home while staying connected to the network. A D&E technician will find the best location during installation for your router. If you have a large home, or a home with thick or dense walls, the wireless router should be placed as high as possible and towards the center of the house. If you want access outside, it is suggested that you place the wireless router near a window.

8. How secure are wireless networks?

Wireless routers offer a variety of security features that help to protect your computers and put your concerns at ease. All wireless equipment installed by D&E Communications is equipped with several security features. Our installer will enable these security features (like SSID and WPA encryption) and implement passwords to ensure additional security.

9. Is networking available for my Mac?

Yes. D&E Communications has qualified technicians to install, configure and support home networking for Macintosh Computers.

10. Will networking slow down my Internet connection?

For typical computing tasks, none of your PCs should experience a noticeable slowdown in speed with a wireless home network. This includes common tasks like e-mail, web surfing, and downloading music.

11. Can I network older PCs with different operating systems?

Yes! Home networking is designed to connect various computer makes, models and operating systems so they work together.

12. What is a firewall?

A firewall is security, allowing for safe communications to and from the Internet. Linksys has built a firewall into the routers that will monitor and restrict unauthorized users and hackers from gaining access to your home PCs.

13. What do I need to build a home network?

D&E Communications provides everything you need for home networking. We will install the router, network adapters and any cabling required for your network.

14. What is a router?

A router is a device that connects all of your computers and devices together to share your high-speed Internet service between all the PCs in your home and also protects your home network from Internet attacks.

15. What is a wireless adapter?

An adapter is a device that each PC needs in order to connect your computer to your wireless router. Newer computers have wireless capabilities built in and don’t require wireless adapters. Our technicians will select the best adapter for your needs. USB wireless network adapters work well for desktop computers and a PC card-based network adapters are used for laptops.

16. How many computers will the router support?

Wireless routers will support many PCs. The more devices connected to your network could result in loss of performance.
