What is a Network Interface Device (NID)?

A Network Interface Device (NID) is a weatherproof unit mounted outdoors where the telephone service wires enter your house or business. Usually the unit is a gray box positioned near the electric meter.

Why test at the Network Interface Device (NID) myself?

Testing the phone line yourself can save you money. If you call the phone company right away without testing the line yourself, a telephone company employee may come to your house or business and perform the same test, possibly resulting in a service charge. Plus, if you determine that correcting the problem is your responsibility, you may not need to call the telephone company at all.
